Thank you for interest in the 2023 “Walk 1000 miles for APS Type 1” virtual trek.
Who: Anyone in the APS Type 1 community and their supporters! One of the best features of our online race platform is that participants can log any type of activity. You can run, walk, bike, swim, dance, circuit train, or even clean your house as we move our team toward the finish line. Recruit some friends and family to join you in the fun. A little friendly competition can be great motivation to get moving.
What: Registration is just $10*. After registration, you will receive an email from Racery, the online race platform, with all the information you need to maximize your experience and get comfortable with the website. You will also be given a virtual race bib and number. Each afternoon you will receive an email prompting you to log any activities you completed. When you do so, you will be rewarded with a street view from Google maps showing you a picture of where you are along the course. The miles of all participants will be totaled together to reach our 1000 mile goal.
When: Monday, February 13- Tuesday February 28th (Rare Disease Day)
Where: The trek is virtual, so racers can join from anywhere in the world. Our “race course” begins at iconic Wrigley Field in Chicago, stops at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art made famous in the movie Rocky, continues to the giant ferris wheel on the Ocean City boardwalk at the Jersey shore, and finishes at the Washington Monument. Washington DC is the location of the 5th International Symposium on APS Type 1 on July 7th and 8th.
Why: To raise awareness and fundraise! We encourage you to ask your network for donations, which can be a flat amount or per mile. Donations will be collected on the APS Type 1 Foundation’s donation webpage. All the money raised will fund research, education and support services for APS Type 1 families. This year we are also walking in honor of James Read. Our community was deeply saddened by his loss in 2021 at the age of 20. Many of us met James and his wonderful mother Joann in 2017 at our symposium in Stony Brook, NY, and all were touched by his sweet spirit. James was a gifted musician and an avid explorer. He loved travel and the outdoors. In his memory, his friends and family began a walk that we continue with this trek.
