We’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Carina Leveroni, our first student intern and a dedicated ally to our community whose passion for science and service is an inspiration.

The APS Type 1 Foundation really hit the jackpot with our first student intern, Carina Leveroni.  Carina graduated from the University of San Diego in May 2024 with a degree in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Biomedical Ethics. She has now embarked on the next step of her career journey in Stanford University’s MS Program in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling. Carina shared that her time with the APS Type 1 community has already impacted how she will approach genetic counseling after graduation.

During her time as a student intern with the APS Type 1 Foundation, Carina developed a decision tree to help families and providers navigate when to seek genetic testing—a resource that reflects both her academic expertise and her commitment to supporting patients.

After graduation, Carina spent her gap year giving back through volunteer work with several science non-profits, bringing hands-on STEM activities into underserved schools and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

We celebrate Carina’s achievements and look forward to all that she will accomplish as she combines her scientific and medical training with her passion for advocacy and community impact.
